Nadège Monchalin, French wheelchair racing champion

Interview conducted by Christophe de l’Onde Carrier

We have never talked so much about disability as this year. I think all people who practice disabled sports are delighted. Me, I’ve been in a wheelchair for 18 years. 18 years ago, handisport was not that. And then, even the disabled person, she was not seen at all as she is today.

Nadège Monchalin

Nadège Monchalin is licensed at the ASM in the handisport section. She practices athletics: wheelchair racing.

She practiced sport as a hobby for 10 years.

Before being in a wheelchair, I studied STAPS and I really liked competitive sport. And I found it difficult to take the plunge and tell myself that disabled sports in competition could be very interesting

Handisport chairs

Armchair rugby: they have a very particular shape depending on whether you are an attacker or a defender.

Basket armchair : they have yet another form

Racing chairs for athletics. It has two large wheels behind and a small one in front. It measures 1.70 meters in wingspan.

When you start, you find racing chairs that fit a lot of people. They are already very expensive. . Then, we refine the settings and we go to a custom chair.

There are very few licensees in France to practice this sport. So there are very few wheelchairs available for running. There are also few structures to practice whether it is running, wheelchair rugby or wheelchair basketball.

Right away, that’s another problem, in fact the practice of disabled sports.

110 years of ASM Omnisports as seen by Nadège Monchalin

It is true that ASM is 110 years old. And yet, ASM always has this capacity to modify, to change, to invent, to reinvent itself. And that’s what is really great to always have ideas to evolve and to keep people coming and participating. _It’s not an old club, it’s still a young and dynamic club_. I am amazed by that.
