While trying to flee her violent husband, a 17-year-old Iranian girl was murdered in cold blood by him. The case shakes the country and could upset the established order in terms of prison sentences.

Her name was Mona, she was 17 years old and wanted to flee her violent husband to whom she had been forcibly married. For him it was an affront. He beheaded her. The video of this smiling man just after his crime committed in the middle of the street, brandishing the head of his victim like a trophy, ulcerates Iranian public opinion. According to local media, Mona had a 3-year-old son.

Mona had fled her rural southwestern Iran for Turkey, where she had made contact with a man who promised to save her. But her father and her brother found her and convinced her to return to her husband, for the honor of the family. Mona’s husband only faces a light sentence. But the Iranians no longer want to forget these faces that haunt the front pages of the newspapers. 450 women are said to be killed each year for honor in the country.
