A vehicle and a trailer were burned on Sunday night on the Viandes B&B site, a Marieville slaughterhouse which has increased its failures related to hygiene and animal welfare in recent years. The Sûreté du Québec has opened an investigation and currently considers these fires “highly suspicious”.
The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) was informed “around one o’clock in the morning” of fires taking place on the grounds of the Les Viandes B&B slaughterhouse, confirms Louis-Philippe Ruel, communications officer at the SQ, specifying that in Arriving on the scene, it was found that two vehicles had been engulfed in flames.
A vehicle and a trailer type trailer were set on fire. “It was really two separate fires. This is why it was considered highly suspicious,” says Louis-Philippe Ruel, information officer for the Sûreté du Québec.
Monday morning, a fire scene technician and an SQ investigator went to the scene to collect any clues potentially present. “At this time, there are no leads relayed to me or any potential suspects. We are really at the start of the investigation,” says Mr. Ruel.
The duty published an investigation into the Viandes B&B slaughterhouse less than two weeks ago. This reported repeated failures noted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ) in less than two years. During this period, twenty proceedings were filed by the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP) against the company concerning breaches relating to hygiene and animal welfare.
