“It is clear that the public prosecutor will ask for a prison sentence in the penitentiary”, that is to say more than two years, indicated the Crown prosecutor, Mr.and Nicolas Ammerlaan, Tuesday leaving the courtroom, at the Montreal courthouse, where Christian Varin’s file was back.
When Mr. Varin receives his sentence next May, there will also be discussions about the Pavillon des inventors du Québec, a chalet built by the accused in Shefford, in the Eastern Townships, which the ministry public intends to confiscate as proceeds of crime, added Mand Ammerlan.
The president of the Fédération des inventors du Québec cheated hundreds of clients for several years by making them believe that he was applying for patents to protect their inventions, when he was not.
In his judgment rendered last January, Judge Alexandre Dalmau of the Court of Quebec described him as an “impostor who exploits public credulity” and a “charlatan of the 21and century”.
