Casinos | Another strike day for support workers on Thursday

Some casino workers will hold another strike day on Thursday.

For the most part, these are support employees in these casinos, and not croupiers who are not on strike.

This day of walkout will generally affect the catering, security, maintenance services, for example, except in Mont-Tremblant, where the croupiers will actually be affected.

Loto-Québec indicates that four establishments and online games will be affected, “in a limited way” since the executives also provide services. As a result, the casinos in Montreal, Charlevoix and Mont-Tremblant will be open Thursday from 2 p.m. to midnight. Regular hours are in effect at the Casino du Lac-Leamy in Gatineau.

These 1,700 workers are union members of the Federation of Public Service Employees, which is affiliated with the CSN.

The dispute is mainly about wages.

The union is demanding increases equivalent to the cost of living increase plus $1 an hour. He argues that the Société des casinos and Loto-Québec make good profits and that the workers must take advantage of this. He says he refuses that his members become impoverished.

For its part, Loto-Québec claims to offer “good working conditions to all its employees. Salaries in casinos are clearly above the reference market, at more than 20% for the majority of job categories”.

“The value of the union’s current demands corresponds to more than double what was granted to all the other employees of the organization in the past year,” says Loto-Québec.

Seven other collective agreements affecting other employees were renewed in casinos in 2022.
