Julie Laussat, author of the book “Mon Noël écolo” gives her advice for choosing a tree while reducing its impact on the environment.
Buying a Christmas tree can have an impact on the environment. However, there are alternatives to reduce it.
The natural fir
Contrary to popular belief, natural fir has a better carbon footprint compared to artificial fir. “The natural fir emits 3 kilograms of CO2 per year while an artificial fir emits 8“, specifies Julie Laussat, author of the book” Mon Noël écolo “. Ideally, it is even better to choose a tree produced locally.
The artificial tree
If the choice is really made on the artificial tree, there are a few things to take into account. First of all, it is possible to buy a second-hand artificial tree. Also, be careful not to choose a tree on which components such as artificial snow have been added. You should not, moreover, hesitate to choose a tree of very good quality. So you can keep it as long as possible.
The artisanal tree
Finally, the third alternative is to use anything that is zero waste or from recovery. Green plant, homemade wooden fir … many tutorials are available on the Internet. “The positive sides of this alternative are that we don’t buy anything new (…) we consume less energy, less resources and we produce less waste“, emphasizes Julie Laussat.
