They marked their time, 25 years ago, by becoming the first ambassadors of “girl power”. A quarter of a century after their debut, the Spice Girls are releasing their first album this Friday, October 29. And today, they continue to unleash the crowds.

Everyone knows the title “Wannabe”. 25 years ago, with this hit, the Spice Girls imposed a new style. With their music, the five girls have become a social phenomenon, but for their 25th birthday, fans are going to be disappointed. Initially, the group of Geri, Emma, Melanie, Mel and Victoria is a marketing product. Quickly, they impose a cool and sexy feminism. “Everyone is talking about us, but we are not top models”, Emma Bunton said in an old interview.

Back then, all the girls wanted to be like them. The Spice Girls tornado ignites the planet in two years and two discs. In South Africa, Nelson Mandela even receives them as heads of state. “It’s the equivalent of the Beatles mania in the 90s, their debut album ranks number one in 37 countries, it’s unheard of.”, recalls music journalist Sarah Dahan. But all this only lasted five years. Since then, they have made solo careers and founded families. 25 years later, they reissue their first album, but no Spice Girls concert is planned. To see them again, all five together, we will still have to wait.
