Both sides blame each other for the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka hydroelectric dam on Tuesday, June 6. The Kremlin speaks of an act of deliberate sabotage, while kyiv accuses the Russians of war crimes. Everyone can see disaster as a way to weaken enemies.
As soon as the disaster became known, Ukraine accused Russia of a war crime. The Kremlin responded immediately, calling it a deliberate act of sabotage. Who had an interest in destroying the Nova Kakhovka dam? From a military point of view, the water escaping from the dam widens the Dnieper River, which is a blow for the Ukrainian counter-offensive. “By widening the course of the Dnieper, it is much more complicated. The bridges have all been destroyed”advances Christophe Gomart, former director of military intelligence.
Crimea, potentially at risk
The images of the destroyed dam suggest an action perpetrated by Russia. “It could only have been caused by a large amount of explosives (…) placed by the Russian army which controlled the area”, says Edouard Joly, expert in contemporary conflicts. Russian forces are occupying the dam. It would have destroyed this civil and legal work even if it also reaches their bank according to the expert Edouard Joly. “Civilian targets and infrastructure are normal targets”, he continues. This could endanger supplies for Crimea.
