Day after day, traffic reporters report accidents on our roads, sometimes resulting in injury or, on occasion, death. Citizens suffer from the excessive speed of certain drivers, overtaking maneuvers as reckless as they are useless, sometimes accompanied by backfires from the exhaust pipes of cars whose drivers take themselves for racing drivers.
Rare are the cars that drive at the permitted speed, even granting an additional 10 km/h. Recently, on the highways in the Montreal region, I have not seen any cars stopped by the police for speeding or excessive overtaking. Noise control doesn’t seem to be a concern either. Yet we know that excessive noise causes stress and sickness.
Why don’t the police enforce the rules? If it is a question of a shortage of personnel, that one installs temporary or permanent radars to at least attack the excessive speed! Do not say that it is not necessarily the owner of the car who is driving and that he is therefore not responsible for the misdeeds of his car! If he lent it to someone, he will have to make arrangements with that person to pay the fine. If the car was stolen, the owner will definitely report this fact to the police.
The majority of people want a healthy and safe environment on our roads. In addition, non-compliance with regulations is an irritant and reduces confidence in law enforcement. It is time for the authorities to take notice and deal with it.
