When the conspiracy seizes UFOs

Statements by a former US intelligence official that “the government has been working on extraterrestrial objects for decades” reignited UFO conspiracy theories in early June.

Are extraterrestrials among us, but above all, do governments try to hide their existence from us? These theses are still valid today. In the United States, a television interview by David Grusch, broadcast on June 5, a former member of the American intelligence services, reignited the debate. The ex-soldier, who worked at the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, assures that the American authorities have collected, in recent decades, devices “intact and partially intact”. These are elements “non-human”i.e. of unknown or extraterrestrial origin, “according to their form” and their characteristics “unique”as “their radiological signature”.

On May 31, in Washington, NASA held its first press conference with 16 scientists, to explain how it was going to organize itself to better document “unexplained abnormal phenomena”. It is a question of better listing these phenomena so that those who observe them can testify in all confidence, without fear that it will harm their career.

The major problem with David Grusch’s claims is the lack of evidence. “These revelations are revelations based on conversations he would have had and he himself would not have seen anything with his own eyes.notes Rudy Reichstadt. We have no documents to support all of his claims.”.

From the Nazi UFO Myth to Roswell

The myth of Nazi UFOs, dating from the 1950s, is still in the conspiratorial imagination. A myth according to which UFOs would have been built in secret in secret bases during the period of the Third Reich in Germany, and taken up in a program called Alien Files and broadcast on television.

Because television relayed many conspiracy theories: in 1995, the program L’Odyssée de l’étrang presented by Jacques Pradel broadcast images of a supposed autopsy of an extraterrestrial found in 1947 in the plains of Texas, on the American base of Roswell in New Mexico, after the crash of a UFO. “We know that this autopsy was a hoax”says Tristan Mendès France.

“There is an echo in the conspiratorial imagination especially in relation to the idea that there would be a Deep State which has seized this extraterrestrial technology and which hides it from the population.”

“We prefer the idea that a handful of very powerful people are lying to us than that we just don’t know how to explain certain things.believes Rudy Reichstadt. The idea that we may have cognitive, intellectual, or simply scientific limits (the idea that we can’t explain everything) produces discomfort. It is neglected in favor of that of a hyper-mastery, which “we” know, but which “we” hide it from us. However, hyper-mastery reassures us, gives us the illusion of overcoming a complex world, of escaping the chaos of things.

“When the conspiracy seizes UFOs” is the 50th episode of Complorama with Rudy Reichstadt, director of Conspiracy Watch, and Tristan Mendès France, lecturer and member of the observatory of conspiracy, specialist in digital cultures.
