This will be paramount in knowing which areas are affected by flooding and which roads are safe if an evacuation must take place, Ottawa recommended.
- The emergency kit should always be at hand.
Your essentials grouped in an emergency kit should always be close to you, in an easily portable container such as a backpack or a suitcase.
- Leave your home when advised by operations managers.
“Ignoring this advice could put you and your family’s safety at risk, as well as the safety of people who may need to come to your rescue,” the federal government said.
Don’t forget to bring your emergency kit with you, but also to make the necessary arrangements for your pets.
Also leave a note, which indicates when you left and which you can put in your mailbox.
- Never cross a flooded area.
Whether you’re walking or driving, driving through floods is not a good idea.
“The water may be deeper than it looks, and you could get stuck or your vehicle could be swept away by a strong current,” it says.
It is also best to avoid crossing a bridge where the water is high and the current very strong.
