A little ahead of the usual calendar, the walnuts are already ready to be harvested in Périgord. A fruit whose season is short, only one month.

In the orchards of Périgord, summer plays out but autumn fruits have already appeared in the orchards. Indeed, the walnut harvest has already begun. A fruit that needs a little nudge to fall from its tree. A few seconds jolt and only the ripe fruits leave the walnut trees. “You can clearly see the browning of the internal partition, that’s what determines the maturity of the nut”says David Bon, nut producer.

In 2022, the fruits are brought forward by ten days. The producer had never covered the 20 hectares of his orchard so early. The drought could well leave its mark. “We will see next year for the trees because, often, the effects of drought, we see them the following year and it is not certain that they will give us as many nuts next year”, confides the producer. For the moment, the trees are generous. Walnuts are just beginning to arrive on market stalls but also on restaurant menus. To taste them, you have to go quickly because the season is short, only one month.
