The franceinfo Talk looks at the Russian presidential election, which will be held at the end of the week. Ludo Pauchant receives Nicolas Tenzer, specialist in geostrategic issues and Sylvie Bermann, former French ambassador to Russia.
The presidential election in Russia will be held from March 15 to 15, 2024. The re-election of Vladimir Putin is in little doubt, both at home and abroad. Vladimir Putin is not worried about this election. As proof, the latter is not even campaigning: no meeting has been planned, unlike 2018 when the latter organized two meetings a few days before the election, no campaign program.
An election without real opposing candidates
The outcome of the vote is beyond doubt. Vladimir Putin is sure to run for a fifth term. Because if the Kremlin tolerates systemic opposition, these parties should only share a few votes. Five parties can present candidates in the Russian presidential elections, without the need to obtain citizen sponsorship signatures: United Russia, Liberal Democratic Party, Communist Party, New People and Fair Russia).
For other parties, political figures must collect between 100,000 and 105,000 signatures from citizens to run for office. This was the case of Boris Nadezhdine. Ultimately, the Central Election Commission invalidated his candidacy, citing errors in his sponsorship signatures. Vladimir Poutine therefore managed to get rid of as a competitor, to calmly consider his re-election at the end of the week.
