VIDEO. “Info or Intox” Tensions DR Congo

While historical tensions between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda have recently been rekindled, publications are fueling an already stormy political and security climate by disseminating distorted and misleading images.

For several weeks, strong tensions have erupted between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda against the backdrop of regular fighting between the Congolese army and the former Tutsi rebellion of M 23. Kinshasa accuses Kigali of supporting the armed group, which denies the Rwandan authorities.

This context is conducive to the dissemination of false information, in particular through the misuse of images.

Thus, a very violent video, which shows a man, feet and hands bound, beaten heavily in the face was wrongly presented as being that of a Congolese student tortured by Rwandans. The scene was most likely shot in Ghana.

Similarly, a Facebook publication claims to present, with supporting photos, an illegally built bridge between Rwanda and DR Congo while the work is part of a completely official hydroelectric project with the agreement of the stakeholders.

Finally, a photomontage reports a fictitious declaration of war between the two neighboring countries.
