The UN body expressed its “deep concern” in front of the escalation of the conflict in Ethiopia between the rebels of Tigray and the federal government.

A call for a ceasefire. The UN Security Council on Friday 5 November expressed its “deep concern” faced with the escalation of the conflict in Ethiopia between the Tigray rebels and the federal government. Council members “call for an end to hostilities and to negotiate a lasting ceasefire”, they said in a joint statement. They also ask “creating the conditions to launch an inclusive Ethiopian national dialogue to resolve the crisis”.
This statement comes two days after the publication of a UN report denouncing possible crimes against humanity and war crimes in the Ethiopian conflict. A public council meeting, scheduled for Friday, has been postponed to Monday. The UN Security Council was struggling so far to agree on a common position. The fifteen member countries issued this declaration while after a year of war, the Tigrayan rebels, opposed to the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, threaten to march on the capital Addis Ababa.
They have in particular “expressed deep concern about the spread and intensification of military clashes in northern Ethiopia”, as well as “repercussions of the conflict on the humanitarian situation” and “the stability of the country and the whole region”. The Security Council also reaffirmed its support for “Ethiopia’s territorial integrity and unity”.
