War in Ukraine: two years after the massacre, return to Boutcha, martyr city

– ()

The town of Boutcha, which has become a symbol of Ukraine’s martyrdom, was the scene of a massacre during its occupation by the Russian army at the start of the war. What is the face of this neighborhood marked by the mass grave today?

Only music breaks the silence in the Boutcha military cemetery (Ukraine). For the two years of the invasion of Russian soldiers, Ukrainians are with the dead soldiers, weapons in their hands. Sons, brothers or husbands now elevated to the rank of heroes of Ukraine. Recollection is dignified, in immense sadness. “We never imagined that this war would last so long. But we will continue it until victory”confides a man.

Life has regained its rights

In front of the church, a long stele was installed, for the civilians found on the scene, in a mass grave. “When I walk in the streets of Boutcha, I see again all these bodies that littered the streets, and the burned vehicles”, remembers a woman. In April 2022, the world discovered with horror one of the worst massacres perpetrated by the Russian occupier. There remains today “no more trace of the massacres”reports journalist Dorothée Olliéric, special correspondent to Boutcha, who specifies that “the residents (…) wanted to turn this bloody page of history very quickly”.
