Too young to work? | The duty

Today, the labor shortage is a much bigger problem in Quebec society, to the point that many young people aged 13-14 decide to go to work to earn money. As usual, people take turns complaining or disagreeing because they think they are too young to work.

These young people were not forced, they decided of their own free will to work a few hours after school and on weekends. They have the right to ask for a specific number of hours and to ask for time off so that it is not too demanding or interferes with their studies. It is the consumers of these companies who demonstrate their dissatisfaction when they see young people working there. They don’t understand that if these young workers weren’t there, they wouldn’t be able to come and shop because the store would be closed due to a lack of employees.

Experts had long known that there would be a shortage of employees later on. The demographic shock caused by the baby boom led to a shortage of employees. A solution has settled in, that of young people. According to François Legault, we should instead invest $65 million to train immigrants and invest in machines that do the work for us. The solution that was free is not the right one according to many.

Many say to young people, for example: “What do you mean, you work at your age, you should rather play outside with your friends!” Now, young people are no longer playing outside with their friends, but rather on their cell phones using TikTok or playing video games. These teenagers have decided to let go of their screens to go to work. This allows them to learn the value of money, to be more disciplined and rigorous.

By letting young people who want to work do so, we are helping to fill vacant positions.
