A historical fiction novel
Inspired by real facts, Nineteen Steps tells the story of a young 18-year-old Londoner (Nellie Morris), who has fallen madly in love with an American airman (Ray), in charge of intervening on English soil during the Second World War. Their rocky love story begins in the heart of East London’s Bethnal Green, infamous for the tragedy of March 3, 1943.
At this time, Bethnal Green tube station sheltered locals during the airstrikes. On the evening of the tragedy, hundreds of people came to take refuge there, until the situation calmed down. But unfortunately, a woman carrying a baby falls down the stairs, creating a huge crowd in the basement. A total of 173 people, including 62 children, died, asphyxiated and trampled on the stairs of the station.
This story, Millie knows it thanks to her grandmother Ruth, who survived this tragedy: “I grew up listening to the stories of his life during the war. I feel honored to keep his story alive.”, she said in a statement released by the publishing house HarperCollins. A true tribute to the history of his country and his grandmother, who died in 2020 following Alzheimer’s disease.
A decent first book
Not yet published, this novel will be available in bookstores from September 12, 2023 in the United States. For the moment, no release date in French bookstores has been indicated.
