The presence of women is declining in Chinese power. For the first time in twenty-five years, the Political Bureau, the decision-making body of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), has no women, according to its new composition unveiled on Sunday October 23, at the end of the 20th congress which renewed the President Xi Jinping at the head of the party, and thus of the country.

This new Political Bureau has 24 members. Sun Chunlan, the only woman who was part of this previously 25-person group, has retired and none of the new members are women.

On Saturday, the new composition of the Central Committee, a sort of “parliament” of the party with 205 members, showed the presence of only 11 women. The share of women in this new Central Committee has even declined, from 5.4% to 4.9%, according to the specialized newsletter Neican China. “Women continue to be severely underrepresented at the top of Chinese politics… For the record, women make up 48.8% of the Chinese population and 29.4% of Communist Party members,” points the publication.
