Spaghetti and other farfalle could become scarce commodities. Manufacturers are concerned about a global shortage of durum wheat. Too much rains in Europe and an unprecedented drought in Canada are jeopardizing harvests. Prices could skyrocket.
The pasta market is booming. Manufacturers are preparing to face a shortage of durum wheat, the main ingredient. In a company in Colmar (Haut-Rhin) with around ten employees, for the moment, there is no impact on production. But in a silo, the wheat reserves are quickly melting. “There, we have about 12 tons left, we can produce approximately, depending on the type of pasta, between 15 days and three weeks approximately. It is expected that we will be delivered in September of a tank of 25 tons. , for the rest we are waiting “, foresees Gilles Reichstadt, production manager of Usine Thirion.
An uncertainty linked to bad harvests. When it comes to pasta, the breadbasket of the planet is in Canada, where two-thirds of the world’s production comes from. Problem: with the heat wave that the country suffered, we deplore 30% of losses. In France, the fields are flooded, enough to increase the global losses a little more. Manufacturers are struggling with gold prices: more than 30% on world prices since mid-July. The impact on the shelves is already starting to be felt: the price of a packet of pasta in the supermarket went up in July, and it’s just getting started.
