Since the early 1970s, they have constantly conquered time, not so much the weight of the years as musical trends. The Sparks group, in this case the two inseparable Mael brothers, has the gift of sticking to each era, always a few steps ahead. Synthetic and still gloriously pop, this 26th studio album, “The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte”, released on May 26, is no exception to the rule.

Thanks in particular, according to Ron Mael, to a rigor that pushes them to work every day. “From our point of view, it is sometimes long and difficult to wait for inspiration without doing anything, so it seems to me that it is better, from time to time, to force the process because we become lazy, if we take too much time for ourselves.”

The era goes through the mill of their songs – our addictions, our failings – always with this very visual touch of humor, like this “girl crying in her latte” (The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte) of the album title. “Many artists are able to tell the world by describing it in a traditional way. We take things from life and the daily life around us to transcribe them perhaps in a more original way”welcomes Russell Mael.

The Californian band never stops

The two brothers, who have been releasing records for over fifty years, have a busy schedule. After writing the film Annette directed by Leos Carax, presented at the opening of the Cannes Film Festival in 2021, the same year they were the heroes of the documentary The Sparks Brothers, where the greatest shouted their love for this duo. But the Sparks retain a special love for their songwriting work. “We enjoyed working on Annette so much, we’re on another musical film right now. Then we realize better what strength three or four minute songs have. We’ve always had the passion and a real passion for pop music”, says Ron Mael. Each album seems to renew this evidence: the Sparks are precious. The group will give a concert on June 4 in Nîmes, on June 5 in Marseille and on June 13 at the Grand Rex in Paris.
