Many Spaniards mobilized on Saturday, November 18, at the call of the right and the far right, to protest against the electoral agreement signed by Pedro Sanchez. The socialist Prime Minister promised an amnesty law to Catalan separatists in order to keep his post.
A sea of Spanish and European flags sweeps through the streets of central Madrid (Spain), Saturday November 18. According to the authorities, 170,000 people responded to the call from the right and the far right. The demonstrators intended to protest against a promise of amnesty made by the head of government towards the Catalan separatists. “We must return to common sense, to the constitution, to the separation of powers“, assures Alberto Nuñez Feijoo, leader of the Popular Party.
Other protests in the country
This summer, during the legislative elections, the socialist leader only came second. To stay in power, he negotiated an agreement with the Catalan separatists. In exchange for their vote, Pedro Sanchez promised an amnesty law for separatist leaders and activists, prosecuted in particular for the attempted secession of Catalonia in 2017. This anger extends beyond the streets of the capital. For two weeks, demonstrations have also taken place in around fifty major cities across the country.
