the reimbursement of campaign expenses, a challenge for candidates who have not reached 5% of the vote

The call for donations from the Republicans to reimburse Valérie Pécresse’s campaign was originally due to end on May 16. It is finally extended until May 31. Those who wish can continue to donate. Only one million is missing out of the five that Valérie Pécresse has personally borrowed.

The former candidate of the Republicans and Yannick Jadot for the Greens are the two losers of the presidential election in great financial difficulty. They did not expect to get less than 5% of the vote and therefore not be reimbursed for their campaign costs. They have thus largely spent sums which today fall to them.

But if everyone can participate, the candidates allow themselves the right to refuse certain contributions. Valérie Pécresse notably returned the obol of Nicolas Sarkozy. The former head of state who did not support her during the campaign made a transfer, the ex-candidate fired him on the grounds that she “don’t ask for charity”.

On the other hand, she accepted the check from Laurent Wauquiez. The president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region was generous, 2,000 euros, he who is still considering taking the direction of the Republicans after the summer.

Asked by our colleagues from FigaroEdouard Philippe explained to take very seriously the calls of Yannick Jadot and Valérie Pécresse. “A democracy always lives better when the plurality of opinions is expressed”, judges the former Prime Minister. And he kept his word: he paid 500 euros to Europe Ecologie-Les Verts.

The Greens who also received a check from Jean Lassalle. Check that has not been cashed, confirms Julien Bayou, the boss of the Greens. Jean Lassalle did not stop there: the deputy sent ten euros to the LR and ten euros to the PS.

The socialists, precisely, were cautious: “There is no major difficulty in the financial package, no slate”explained to us on Sunday, May 15, Senator Rachid Temal, who adds: “We had a desire not to go into debt”. Anne Hidalgo’s campaign was therefore frugal, for a result that did not exceed 1.7% in the first round.
