The Nu variant, originally from South Africa, puts Quebec on its guard

“Very worried” before the rise of the Nu variant, François Legault asks Ottawa to suspend flights from South Africa.

“We cannot take the chance that this variant arrives from South Africa and returns to Quebec,” said the Prime Minister during a press scrum in Montreal.

Earlier today, Ontario Premier Doug Ford demanded the same from the federal government.

“We can not repeat the errors that allowed the Alpha and Delta variants to enter this country,” the elected official argued in a press release.

European Union countries agreed on Friday to suspend all flights from South Africa and six other countries in the region.

Canadian airports do not accept direct flights from South Africa. Travel between Canada and the country is marginal.

Further details will follow.
