For its second edition, the Mouffe prize crowned singer-songwriter Alphonse Bisaillon on Thursday, whose richness of musical compositions and depth of texts won over the jury.
“The abundant, flamboyant and intimate universe of Alphonse Bisaillon reveals an authentic creator and a performer with a solid stage presence,” indicated Quebec lyricist Claudine Monfette, alias Mouffe, who gives her name to the award, in addition to sit on the jury.
For a year now, the Mouffe prize has been highlighting the excellence of French-speaking songwriting by artists at the start of their career. It had previously been given to singer Ariane Roy. Nearly 120 applications from young talents from all backgrounds were submitted during this second version.
The honor comes with a $10,000 scholarship and mentorship in directing, producing and broadcasting from Mouffe herself. Alphonse Bisaillon will also have the opportunity next fall to perform on the stage of the Théâtre Outremont, partner of the prize.
“I can’t wait to meet Mouffe to talk about directing and writing! I’m sure we will trip together,” reacted Alphonse Bisaillon, who is returning from a tour in Europe. He will perform in shows across the province this summer, while working on a first album at the same time.
Originally from Sainte-Hyacinthe, the musician rose to second place in 2019 in Cégeps en spectacle de Drummondville with his group Pitounes Maîtresses Mixte. In 2022, he also participated in Ma Première Place des Arts, where he reached the quarter-finals. His eponymous EP was released in October of the same year.
