Abuse of vulnerable people: the government unveils its strategy to combat this phenomenon

(France 2)

The government announced, Monday March 25, a strategy to combat cases of mistreatment of vulnerable people in nursing homes and specialized establishments. In particular, it provides for controls for the 9,300 social and medico-social establishments.

Behind the closed doors of nursing homes and specialized establishments, cases of mistreatment of vulnerable people sometimes go unnoticed. Monday March 25, the government unveils a strategy to fight against this phenomenon, two years after the Orpea scandal, with a first strong measure: the 9,300 social and medico-social establishments will be controlled, according to Radio France. Another measure: the criminal records of human service professionals will be checked. From now on, if an employee is indicted or concerned by a conviction contested on appeal, his employer may suspend or even dismiss him.

Better collect reports

Finally, the government plan provides for a new system to better collect reports of mistreatment. By 2025, establishments will have to provide tools to residents who are unable to express themselves. Professionals, but also law enforcement, will be better trained and made aware of the collection of complaints. A unit responsible for monitoring and processing these reports will be set up in each department.
