Tuesday July 25, the giant panda of the Beauval zoo (Loir-et-Cher) said goodbye to the keepers. He entered his air-conditioned cage for the last time. Yuan Meng was the first giant panda born in France in 2017. The darling of the zoo will travel nearly 9,000 kilometers to China. He will travel by truck to Roissy airport, then by plane to Chengdu (China). There, he will breed with a female panda who is not related to him.
142 grams at birth
The departure of the giant panda had been planned for a long time, but had been postponed by the health crisis. When he was born six years ago, he weighed 142 grams. “It’s amazing how fast he’s growing. Every day there was a change”, confides Delphine Pouvreau, animal caretaker. Today, he is between 120 and 125 kilograms.
