While a ministerial reshuffle is looming, the retention of Elisabeth Borne at the head of government is uncertain. Emmanuel Macron could choose to surround himself with some of his early supporters.

Will Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne leave Matignon? In the ranks of the government, we are careful not to outline a response. “We need a new course, a new direction. There is only one person who is head of state in France, it is the President of the Republic. (…) It is up to him alone to decide”, declared Bruno Le Maire, the Minister of the Economy, Sunday January 7. To succeed him, two names are circulating insistently: that of Sébastien Lecornu, current Minister of the Armed Forces, and that of Julien Denormandie, a long-time close friend of Emmanuel Macron.

The early Macronists back in the forefront?

Julien Denormandie has already managed several ministerial portfolios during the previous five-year term, including that of Agriculture. Richard Ferrand, whose name was also mentioned, himself announced that he refused to return to business. With this potential reshuffle, the President of the Republic wishes to regain control and surround himself with early Macronists. On the far right, a change of government is considered unnecessary. “It agitates the Macronist political class, but frankly, the French don’t care”estimated Thierry Mariani, National Rally MEP.
