Tuesday, May 9, the National Assembly examined a bill aimed at returning the European flag to town halls. This measure divides both in the ranks of the opposition and in those of the majority.

The European flag flies alongside the French flag over the town hall of Dinan (Côtes-d’Armor). This situation could become generalized. “I was convinced that it was already official”, wondered a woman. A man believes: “It is important to remind all citizens of the Union how this union has preserved us since its foundation in 1957.” A bill from the presidential majority was debated in the National Assembly on Tuesday, May 9. It aims to make the European flag compulsory with the French flag. In Dinan, the mayor has had them living together since 2014.

A divisive bill

Other towns also have their own flag, such as Vélizy-Villacoublay (Yvelines). Only, the mayor, Pascal Thévenot, judges that this bill is far from urgent. Municipalities led by the National Rally have made the opposite choice. Thus, only French flags float above the town hall of Villers-Cotterêts (Hauts-de-France). Members of the opposition and members of the majority have made it known that they will not support this bill.
