Housing tension in France is even more significant on our islands. On the island of Batz, in Brittany, the mayor asks the owners of holiday homes to rent their properties for the year in exchange for a helping hand from the municipality.
The closed shutters bear witness to this. The island of Batz (Finistère) is an island on which flourish second homes, to the chagrin of the mayor of the town. “750 homes on the island of Batz, 500 second homes, with shutters closed almost all year round. Out of 10 sales on the island, at least 9 go to new second homes”, laments Eric Grall. The shortage of housing is scaring away the inhabitants and the island almost lost one of its two classes, for lack of students.
Sublets to attract new families
The mayor has therefore decided to facilitate the installation of a new family by providing them with a house. “We have convinced a landlord to rent this house to us and we are going to sublet it to a young family. We are renting it at a market rate to sublet it at a social rate”, explains Éric Grall. The town hall is looking for four or five other second homes to rent year-round and is refining its arguments to convince the owners, tempted by much more lucrative seasonal rentals.
