Created in 1875 by Henri Baron, the Baron cooperage located in Les Gonds near Saintes in Charente-Maritime maintains the ancestral know-how of the profession of cooper in its purest tradition.
Each manufacturing step, from the slitting of the oak logs to the finishing of the barrel, is integrated within the workshops of the Baron cooperage. The most beautiful oaks from French forests are chosen in order to offer a wide range of products. The mildness of our Charentais climate then gives the entire wood yard humidity and sunshine ideal for obtaining impeccable wood.
These wooden logs are cut into logs and then staves to become staves ! These shaped staves will then be assembled and circled. The total tightness will be checked by filling the barrels with water and air pressure.
These wooden barrels will first be assembled flat and by hand on a table before moving on to more or less long “bouchage”. the broaching, it is the action of heating the interior of the barrels in order to release the tannins from the wood. It is this stage of toasting that will determine the aroma of the wines. Light toasting of 30 minutes maximum for white wines and a few hours for cognacs for example.
Once finished, these barrels remain in raw wood but can be personalized with the name of the wines they will keep. A barrel from the Baron cooperage is sold for an average of 800 euros excluding tax.
