To keep warm in winter, more and more French people are building up their own supply of wood. This practice, known as affouage, actually dates back to the Middle Ages. She is now in the forests communal, as is the case in Brochon (Cote d’Or).

Do you know the principle of affouage? Jean-Paul Vidal, retired, cuts wood on a plot that belongs to his municipality in exchange for thirty euros per month. This practice is called affouage. “It’s interesting from a price point of view, it saves money”, he says. However, he cannot cut just any tree, as this practice is regulated by the ONF (National Forestry Office). The municipal councilor of Brochon (Côte-d’Or) is also present to ensure compliance with its rules.

Every year, about fifteen individuals take advantage of the affouage, because the wood is thus almost free for them. This also allows the municipality to maintain these 400 hectares of forest. Philippe Sovcik, science teacher and daffodist, decided to use daffodilization, because buying wood on the market would cost him 500 euros per year. So he can save money.
