suspected of mistreating a hundred dogs, a 72-year-old man in court

In Vendée, a 72-year-old man was tried for mistreating a hundred dogs. He was summoned to the La Roche-sur-Yon police court on Friday January 28. The decision was under advisement on March 18.

Dogs “starved, “neither identified nor sterilized”

The case dates back to May. The animal protection association Stéphane Lamart has been alerted to the situation of dogs from an undeclared breeder in Lucs-sur-Boulogne. On the spot, she describes in a press release animals “mostly fearful”, living in deplorable conditions : “undernourished and not maintained properly”, “neither identified nor sterilized”.

A situation that lasted “for many years”, according to testimonies collected by Stéphane Lamart, and of which the veterinary services would have been “aware”. The association files a complaint. The hundred dogs are entrusted to the SPA four months later, in September.

Fine of up to 750 euros

The defendant did not appear at the hearing on Friday and was not represented. He faces a fine of up to 750 euros. and the confiscation of his animals. The public prosecutor demanded a fine of 300 euros, as well as the confiscation of the Vendéen animals.

_”The requisitions of the prosecution appeared to me very limited_s, deplores master Patrice Grillon, lawyer for the Stéphane Lamart association. A fine of 300 euros is very little! Therefore _it is a very bad signal that is given_. But that’s because the prosecution is that of a police court. With regard to the defendant, he does not risk much in the end, except public opprobrium, and the fact that he is today in the crosshairs of the State authorities and associations for the protection of animals, so he will always be under supervision and hopefully never have animals with him again.”
