Thursday, April 28, strawberry growers are delighted with the good season they are having. The strawberry remains the favorite fruit of the French.
After two difficult years, the strawberry season got off to a good start on Thursday 28 April. Strawberries were able to take advantage of mild temperatures and good sunshine. “We get to the heart of the matter. We have a little bit of heat and suddenly, we have a little rise in sugar”explains Jean-Marie Giannimarket gardener SAS producers gattierois. In France, six out of ten consumers eat strawberries at least once a week between March and June.
The strawberry growers are developing methods, such as soilless cultivation, which uses fewer pesticides and preserves the fruit. “We are always on the move and looking for different varieties to have the most scent”says Thierry Lemaitre, strawberry producer. France produces 57,000 tonnes of strawberries each year. It faces particular competition from Spain, which produces it for half the price.
