Extended warranty: puncture the screen

In recent years, we have seen a proliferation of infotainment screens on board vehicles. Some are tactile, others not. However, the majority of them include an ever-increasing number of features (air conditioning, heating, owner’s manual, etc.).

You should also know that these screens are generally guaranteed for a period of only three years. Including brands that offer comprehensive guarantees over a longer period. Considering all these elements, many dealers offer an extended warranty in the event of a malfunction once the original warranty has expired. Given the cost of replacing a simple screen (around $4,000), the offer is worth listening to. And negotiated too.

Insurance: knowing how to protect yourself

Car thefts are on the rise.

In 2022, 10,595 car thefts were recorded by the Groupement des assureurs automobiles (GAA) du Québec. This is an increase of 37% compared to the previous year. Worse still, the average cost of car theft claims is now $35,168, due to the ever-increasing price of vehicles. We understand better why insurance premiums are also exploding.

However, there are a few ways to thwart burglars. For example, storing your keys in a safe place, away from front doors or in a special metal case (around $40), especially if it is an electronic key. Please note that it is also possible to deactivate the key. Instructions can be found in the vehicle owner’s manual.

Do not leave insurance or registration certificates or any other document containing your contact details in the car. Ask about marking parts or installing a tracking system. Some insurers may offer discounts for this type of protection.

Tires: the bad idea

PHOTO ARCHIVES THE PRESS

Winter tires are not recommended in summer.

Winter tires in summer? This is the solution adopted by many consumers to balance their automobile budget, according to the mechanics contacted by The Press. A saving of pennies.

The tread of winter tires is considerably softer, and therefore wears more quickly in hot weather. This tire also becomes less safe, because it has less grip in the rain, is more prone to punctures and drastically extends braking distances at high speeds. In addition, due to the relief of its tread, the winter tire results in higher fuel consumption.
