At 35, Hélène must learn to live in society, learn to make friends, to have hobbies. She simply has to learn to exist on her own, because she grew up and spent all these years in the community of Jehovah’s Witnesses, until now her only horizon.You are lost, you have no horizon, she explains. You have to try to be normal because we lived in a bubble, with strict rules. The grip is so strong after 30 years that you have to start all over again.”

130,000 followers in France

Hélène was only three years old when her parents became Jehovah’s Witnesses, a religious community which claims nearly 130,000 followers in France. Every year new baptisms are celebrated. The sectarian aberrations monitoring mission claims to be particularly vigilant. The refusal of blood transfusion and certain principles of education worries the authorities.
