Mohawk police in Akwesasne confirm the discovery of six bodies recovered from a marshy area of the St. Lawrence River early Thursday evening.
Police sources consulted by TVA Nouvelles confirmed that the victims would be “migrants” from the United States trying to reach Canada.
The police of the Indian reserve located in Montérégie has also opened an investigation to understand the causes and circumstances surrounding the death of these six people.
“[Les corps] were found during an aerial search this afternoon with the assistance of the Canadian Coast Guard,” said Akwesasne Mohawk Police.
After the discovery of a first body in a swampy area, “the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Marine Unit continued to search the area with the assistance of the Coast Guard and the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department” , said the Mohawk authorities.
Authorities, who will await the results of autopsies and toxicology tests to determine the cause of death, are seeking to identify the victims.
