Almost two weeks after the death of Thomas, stabbed to death in Crépol (Drôme), several prefectures have banned the ultra-right demonstrations planned for December 1 and during the weekend, for risk of disturbances to order audience.

The gathering presented as “in homage to Thomas” was to take place at 7 p.m. at Place de la Bourse in Bordeaux (Gironde), Friday December 1st. It was banned by the Gironde prefecture to prevent the risk of disturbances to public order, fearing possible clashes between far-right and far-left activists. Same decision in Valence (Drôme) or even in Paris. Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez advocates firmness. “We are extremely attentive to this type of gathering. We have comments made that incite hatred and violence”he explains.

An active movement on social networks

Since Thomas’ assassination, the identity movement has been heard in Lyon (Rhône), Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine), and even Reims (Marne). Islamophobic tag in the Channel, poster stuck in Versailles (Yvelines), calls to avenge Thomas… It is difficult to know if the number of these nationalist and violent activists has increased, but they are more visible on social networks.

“They are scavengers and all those who take advantage of this period to make people believe that it is an entire community or name or origin that should be able to be incriminated for this are wrong”, declared Olivier Véran, government spokesperson. French intelligence services count 3,000 activists who are members of small identity groups active in the territory. 1,300 are listed as S.
