Saint-Tropez has decided to increase taxes on its second homes. The town hall is going to increase the housing tax for holiday homes by 60%, because the inhabitants can no longer find accommodation at reasonable prices.
Behind the luxury and glitter, hides in Saint-Tropez (Var) a much less flamboyant reality. The village loses its inhabitants: – 40% in almost 20 years. The fault in particular with the housing which has become unaffordable for many. “When I arrived here 20 years ago, we could find accommodation for relatively fair prices. There was a little life in winter that there isn’t now”notes a resident.
Government decree
Same observation for Véronique Kirstein. This shopkeeper has been working in this shop for two years. An opportunity she would never have considered without the help of her employer. “I was offered this position with housing. Otherwise, I would never have accepted”, she says. To remedy this problem and bring back a population year-round, the town hall has just taken a strong decision: to increase the housing tax for second homes by 60%, starting in 2024. A measure made possible by a decree of the government.
