Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle | A suspicious package forces the closure of the border post

A package that could contain explosives was found inside a vehicle at the Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle border crossing in Montérégie on Thursday evening. Customs was closed.

The vehicle containing the suspicious package was intercepted around 6:30 p.m., according to Stéphane Tremblay, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ). “Inside the package was what might look like explosives,” he said.

Explosives technicians are on their way to customs to identify the contents of the package, according to Mr. Tremblay.

Until the situation is resolved, the border crossing between Quebec and the United States at Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, in Montérégie, is closed in both directions.

“The health and safety of the public and our officers are of the utmost importance to the Canada Border Services Agency,” said Maria Ladouceur, spokesperson for the federal institution, by email.

People wishing to go to or from the United States must go through another entrance, either Route 223, Route 221 or go to Hemmingford.

Commercial traffic is diverted to the St-Armand/Philipsburg border crossing.
