A trial awaited across the Channel. HASaccused of violence against his companion, Ryan Giggs appears in front of British justice in Manchester, from Monday August 8. The ex-winger denies these accusations, even if they led him to resign from his post as Wales manager ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

This legendary Manchester United player (963 games, 169 goals) is accused of having assaulted his former partner Kate Gerville, during a violent argument on November 1, 2020. He must also answer for the offense of behavior of control over his partner during their relationship, which began in 2017 and ended on the day of the facts with which he is accused. This charge covers acts of“isolation, belittlement, humiliation, harassment, degradation and ill-treatment”.

Now 48, Giggs pleads not guilty to the charges against him, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. The trial is to last ten days. Giggs, arrested at his home at the time of the events and released, is also charged with violence against the sister of his ex-partner, Emma Gerville.

At a preliminary hearing in April 2021, he disputed the charges against him and pleaded not guilty. His trial was originally scheduled for January, but had to be postponed due to backlogs in the courts. On Wednesday, another awaited trial will open: that of Benjamin Mendy, tried for rape and sexual assault on seven women.
