The painter Repin knew, through his paintings, accurately tell the story of Russia. A retrospective is dedicated to him for the first time in France, at the Petit Palais in Paris. Repin, the soul of Russia, invests the Little Palace
Unknown in France, Répine is a star for Russian youth. “Repine’s memories are the paintings, which we see since we were very young in the textbooks”, recount Dmitrii Udod, influencer in art history. Repin was born into a poor peasant family. He will become the storyteller of Russia, that of haulers, exhausted, pulling a boat on the Volga, religious processions or intellectuals of his time.
His masterpiece, The Cossacks zaporogues writing a letter to the Sultan of Turkey, measures two by three meters. It is worthy of a movie poster. “We can easily imagine that we are in front of a cinema screen, with a certain number of extras and main characters”, comments Stéphanie Cantarutti, curator of the exhibition. In 60 years of painting, Repin crossed the Russia of the tsars, that some dices popular balls and revolutions. Stephanie Cantarutti describes it as “a deeply free man”.
