(Toronto) Police say a woman who was seriously injured in the 2018 Toronto van attack died of her injuries in hospital.
Toronto police said in a statement Thursday that Amaresh Tesfamariam, who was 65, died on October 28.
She had been hospitalized since April 23, 2018, after Alek Minassian drove a rental van on the sidewalk of Yonge Street, killing 10 people and injuring 16 others.
Alek Minassian was convicted in March of 10 counts of first degree murder and 16 counts of attempted murder.
According to Toronto police, the death of Mme Tesfamariam is now considered a homicide, but Alek Minassian will not face another murder charge.
Toronto Police spokesperson David Hopkinson clarified that the charge cannot be laid for first degree murder because too much time has passed since Mr.me Tesfamariam was injured.
“I understand a new charge will not be laid,” said Hopkinson. But the judge will take into account that there is a new victim when determining the sentence. ”
The sentence against Alek Minassian is due next year.
