Northvolt was slapped on the wrist by the Quebec government after the accidental clearing of a marsh which was not included in the project plans for the future battery factory in Saint-Basile-le-Grand, in Montérégie .
The Ministry of the Environment, the Fight against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks issued a notice of “non-compliance” on Wednesday, but the company immediately proposed measures to remedy the situation.
“This wetland is disconnected from the water system and its ecological functions have been assessed as “low to medium”,” Nothvolt said in a statement Thursday.
This incident resulted in the felling of two mature ash trees which were cut down in a wetland covering an area of more than 1000 square meters which is excluded from the work zone.
To rectify the situation, Northvolt, which says it is collaborating with the Urban Wood Development Center (CVBU), plans to plant seven alternate-leaved dogwoods, seven Hart dogwoods and seven white willows.
As a reminder, environmentalist groups carried out acts of “sabotage” to demonstrate their opposition to the project to build the Northvolt battery factory which received the green light from the authorities.
