While the latest figures from the Covid-19 epidemic show a drop in contamination in France and in the Pays de la Loire region, the Nantes University Hospital has only one patient hospitalized in intensive care due to Covid-19. 19. “We are on a downward slope” recognizes Professor Raffi, head of the infectious diseases department at the Nantes University Hospital, but François Raffi warns against a rebound from this pandemic : “We remain on an incidence rate which is around 450 per 100,000 inhabitants, which at the time of the dangerous variants, such as the Delta, would have led to a health catastrophe. Fortunately, today it is the ‘Omicron which is much less dangerous but nevertheless it is an incidence which remains high with contamination which remains very significant”.
New variants
According to Professor Raffi, we must fear a return of the epidemic because variants continue to emerge: “There, we report new variants in South Africa and Europe, and therefore in the coming months, _there will certainly be a rebound in the epidemic_. Will this new variant be more contagious? most likely. Will it be more dangerous? I hope not but we are not immune”.
