Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recalled Ukrainian ambassadors to Morocco and Georgia, saying they weren’t enough “effective” to obtain weapons or sanctions against Russia in these two countries. “There are those who work so that Ukraine can defend itself and fight for its future and there are those who waste their time clinging to their posts. I signed a first decree to recall such a person , Ambassador to Morocco“Oksana Vassilieva, he said in a video message on March 30, 2022. The Ukrainian ambassador had been stationed in Rabat since April 2020.

“I expect results in the coming days from our representatives in Latin America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Africa. I also expect results from our military attachés. The diplomatic front is a front key and all must work efficiently”

Morocco, like many countries on the Continent, has adopted a position of neutrality since the start of the Russian war against Ukraine. On March 2, he refused to take part in the vote on a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on the situation between Ukraine and Russia. “Morocco’s non-participation cannot be interpreted in any way in relation to its position of principle concerning the situation between the Russian Federation and Ukraine. (…) The Kingdom of Morocco reaffirms its strong attachment respect for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and national unity of all Member States of the United Nations”, explained the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release.

Ukrainian diplomacy finds it difficult to make itself heard in Africa. Twenty African countries abstained during the vote on a UN resolution demanding the withdrawal of Russian troops. More than a month after the start of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, South Africa, the continent’s diplomatic power, remains on the ground of neutrality and refuses to condemn Moscow, advocating a resolution of the conflict through dialogue. Many African countries have historical ties with Russia, which has overwhelmingly supported anti-colonial and pro-independence movements. Russia has also supported the entry of South Africa alongside it into the Brics club (of which the Brazil, India and China).
