An essentially honorary post. The German head of state, the social democrat Frank-Walter Steinmeier, was re-elected on Sunday, February 13, for five years in this post where he must embody a moral authority going beyond partisan divisions.

In office since March 2017, the former head of German diplomacy was chosen by a large majority by a specially constituted electoral college, bringing together national deputies, a large number of local elected officials, former German leaders, as well as certain personalities from civil society.

Barely re-elected, he felt that Moscow carried “the responsibility” of a risk of “war” in Europe because of the tensions around Ukraine, on the eve of a visit by Chancellor Olaf Scholz to Kiev and then to Moscow. “We are in the middle of a risk of military conflict, of war in Eastern Europe and it is Russia that bears the responsibility”did he declare.
