Ottawa wants consultations before updating the Emergency Measures Act

The federal government is open to possible changes to the Emergency Measures Act, but first it wants to conduct broad consultations on the law it invoked to suppress the Freedom Convoy protests ago two years.

In its final response Wednesday to a commission of inquiry, the Liberal government also describes the measures it is taking to improve the flow of information and protect main transportation corridors.

However, he downplays the need to adopt many of the commission’s suggested changes to police protocols.

Judge Paul Rouleau made 56 recommendations, including nearly twenty specifically linked to the Emergency Measures Act itself.

In early February 2022, downtown Ottawa was besieged by protesters, many on large trucks, who arrived in town beginning in late January. Initially billed as a protest against COVID-19 health restrictions, the rally attracted people with various grievances against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his government.

Protests spread and trucks blocked major routes into the United States in Windsor, Ontario, and Coutts, Alberta.
