North of Quebec | Head-on collision injures several in Chibougamau

Two women and a man were injured after a violent confrontation that occurred on Route 167 in Chibougamau late Monday afternoon. An ambulance trying to rescue them also lost control and ran off the road.

The accident occurred around 3 p.m. around kilometer 212 of Route 167, in Chibougamau, in the Nord-du-Québec region. This road connects Lac-Saint-Jean to Mistissini via Chibougamau.

For some unknown reason, one of the vehicles veered off course before colliding with another oncoming vehicle.

The temperature, especially the snow, could have played a role in the accident, but an investigation will determine it, indicates Béatrice Dorsainville, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec.

In one of the vehicles, two women were seriously injured. One of them, the driver, is in critical condition and we fear for her life. The driver of the other vehicle was also injured.

Several ambulances were dispatched to the scene, including one that veered off the road and rolled over several times, reports Mme Dorsainville. The paramedics were not injured and there was no break in service either, she said.

The portion of Route 167 where the accident took place has been closed to traffic while the investigation is underway.
