Vladimir Putin will not have finally listened to the many heads of state around the world who have tried to reason with him and declared war on Ukraine this Thursday, February 24, 2022. Eager to “recover” Ukrainian lands which, according to him, belong to Russia, the Russian President ordered his army to launch the first bombardments in order to frighten his neighbour.
Very quickly, the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron wanted to support Ukraine in a speech. “I want to salute the courage and determination of the Ukrainian president, the authorities and the Ukrainian people. In this ordeal, France stands alongside Ukraine.” he advanced.
“Vladimir Putin has decided to carry out the most serious attack on peace, on stability in our Europe for decades” he continued. “We had anticipated this war together and alongside our allies, we have done everything to avoid it. Now it is there and we are ready. To this act of war, we will respond with cold blood, determination and unity” said the head of state.
Finally, if the president did not fail to recall that he intends “to protect the French” above all, he then raised the possibility of “sanctioning” Russia by cutting, for example, the numerous energy contracts signed between the two countries.
A phone conversation in the middle of the night
Despite everything, Emmanuel Macron tries to keep in touch with Vladimir Poutine and took the initiative to call him this Thursday morning. The two presidents thus had a “serious and frank” telephone exchange concerning the military operation launched by Russia
During his conversation with Emmanuel Macron, Vladimir Putin “gave a detailed explanation of the reasons and circumstances of the decision to carry out a special military operation” in Ukraine, the Kremlin said. According to a source within the French presidency, the tenant of the Élysée “demanded the immediate cessation” of the Russian offensive “by recalling that Russia was exposed to massive sanctions”.
